VinoShipperSocial

I lifted the following quote form a recent wine-blog called "The Wine Case"

On a different scale and with a different perspective, it’s that meeting of social and commercial networks that Vinoshipper is looking towards, by selling wines from nearly 200 small wineries (many from less-known wine-producing areas) that have little access to online distribution, and also building a community (a tribe) on Vinoshipper Social, with video primers, forum discussions, etc. Vinoshipper Social has about 100 members for the moment (compared to the Open Wine Consortium, which is heading towards 2000 members), but it certainly has potential. If it can figure out more precisely how to tie in both sides of the equation.

As a professional in Mathematics and Computer Science currently focused on researching Social Networking I have to say this is an excellent rendering of the problem, i.e., "the equation".

That being said... What do you think of the new look and feel of the VinoShipperSocial site?

AND what do you suggest be done to "more precisely TIE IN both sides of the equation"?

This is not the forum for B2B - the OWC is the best place for that, the concept behind VSS is to bring the consumer in direct contact with the winery, there are too many other places for B2B and so we are not going in that direction. We want it to be a good place for wine lovers to learn and ask about wine and get a shared response. The blog folks help by spreading the word or the answers. B2B - not for us.

Nope not me - I am just a lingerer on the OWC and not an admin. I think you have to be careful though not to over promote the coffee side - folks are here for wine and are not expecting long articles about coffee. JMO

New look: good; feel: somewhat mixed. I found today [doh!] the new inbox on the side and it says I have a new message, but I can't seem to find a new message, and when I click on the most recent one, it doesn't turn off the "1 new" indicator. Bug? Undocumented feature? User error?

As one with no known mathematical ability, I can't help with tieing equations. I'm not sure that tieing it together would be a good thing, since one of VS's virtues, IMHO, is its simplicity. Mucking it up by combining the two would be a disaster, or, at least, unnecessarily confusing. VSS suffers for the lack of critical mass. When the number of members hits a certain level (has anyone studied this?) discussion becomes viable and easily sustained. I've seen that elsewhere when there was an large influx of people into a forum that had previously been a dead zone. When you have a core of people willing/interested in keeping a discussion alive things get lively. How you get there, of course, is a good question. It may simply be a matter of time. I know there are already a goodly number of thoughtful and considerate people here, and, for my money, that's a good start.

Andrew - in regards to your mention about the inbox feature - it is to my knowledge that this is a recent change across the Ning platform. Essentially, your inbox will now open within the body of the webpage, rather than on the top of the page, as seen before... In your specific instance, it could just be an isolated incident, as I have not run across that problem... yet... For better or worse, we'll see how the new change works out :)

Yes! Ning did another major update. The Message handling has been move from the top section and into a more appropriate form including an "inbox" and associated with each members pseudo control panel. I always found it took new members some time to figure out how the message system worked. Perhaps its now more in line with other systems and folks will understand how to use it faster. We shall see.

Its 1:30am and I'm tired... I'll address the notion of "tie in both sides of the equation" mentioned in the external wine blog another time. I need to hang up my wings and crash for the night.

Thanks Ryan for the information on the Ning update. Apparently I'm stuck with 1 phantom new message that will not go away. I think I can handle the concept of (equation?) true new = greater- than- 1 new, I think.

Here's a data point Ms Mathematician: Jakob Nielsen, no fan of social nets outside of intranets, claims that 1% contribute, the rest (99% hehe), for the most part, lurk:

Hey, I'd lurk if only a certain winged party would let me.... nothing wrong with lurking, from the lurker's perspective...
