I thought this was an interesting item, although I had heard of Mead I had never considered thinking about it as a wine – it was just Mead.

In looking closer it has a whole following and it has its own “varietals” – this is what I have found and so thought I would share.

Honey (this is the traditional mead)
Cyser (Apple juice added)
Pyment (Grape juice added)
Melomel (Various fruits added)
Metheglin (Spiced mead)
Braggot (Malt added)
Mixed (combination of the above)

So wine or not wine?

Hi Steven -

Mead is considered a wine because it is honey, water and yeast fermented. If it were fermented with hops it would be considered a beer. We used to make a traditional Mead, also made a Mead with grapes called Blush My Honey and we used to make a Raspberry Mead. They were all good sellers, but just got to the point where we were making too many wines.
